The Burleson High School Elk Strutters were established in 1979, evolving from the original dance team, the Bandettes, which performed from 1970 to 1979 under the direction of Jan Paxston. The Bandettes served as the front line of the military-style marching band, performing at halftime shows and UIL marching competitions. In the spring of 1979, Susie Herren was named the new director. Under her leadership, the Bandettes transitioned into the Elk Strutters and became an independent organization, no longer part of the music department.
Over the past four decades, the Elk Strutters have been featured performers for major professional sports teams, including the Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Cowboys, San Antonio Spurs, and the Dallas Stars. Their performances have taken them across the country, with appearances in cities such as New Orleans, Orlando, New York City, Nashville, Washington, D.C.—where they performed at the prestigious "Black Tie & Boots Inaugural Gala"—and Los Angeles, among others. A notable highlight includes their 2003 performance for Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, at TCU.
The Strutters have also excelled in local, state, and national competitions, consistently earning Sweepstakes, Super Sweepstakes, and Judges Awards in categories such as Choreography, Precision, Showmanship, and Technique. They have also received Best in Class honors for both officer and team routines, showcasing their dedication to excellence and artistry in every performance.
